Hello dear friend,
We've journeyed through various aspects of mental health together this week. As we reach the halfway mark of our series, today's focus is on a condition that arises from experiencing life's most harrowing moments: Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).
What is PTSD? Contrary to some beliefs, PTSD isn't reserved solely for war veterans. It can affect anyone who has undergone traumatic events, including natural disasters, physical or sexual assault, serious accidents, or witnessing life-threatening events.
Understanding the Impact: When our sense of safety and trust is deeply shattered, the mind often struggles to process the event. This can lead to intense emotional and even physical reactions, far after the trauma has passed.
Recognising the Symptoms:
1. Reliving the Event: Repeated, involuntary memories; distressing dreams; or flashbacks.
2. Avoidance: Steering clear of places, activities, or people that are reminders of the traumatic event.
3. Changes in Physical and Emotional Reactions: Being easily startled or frightened, self-destructive behaviour, difficulty sleeping or concentrating.
4. Mood Changes: Feelings of detachment, negative thoughts about oneself, distorted feelings like guilt.
Healing from PTSD: Treatment is available, and early intervention is crucial. It may include therapy, medication, or a combination of both. The aim is to reduce emotional and physical symptoms, improve daily functioning, and help the individual cope with triggering events.
It's also essential to understand that everyone processes trauma differently. We must respect and support their journey without judgment or pressure.
As we continue our deep dive into mental health, let's remain kind, compassionate, and patient. Let's be a haven for those who carry unseen burdens and offer them the warmth of understanding and empathy.
Looking forward to sharing more insights tomorrow,
Warmest wishes,
Dekunle
