Hello friend,
As we journey through our ten-day introspection on mental health, today, our focus shifts towards a condition often misconstrued: Bipolar Disorder.
What is Bipolar Disorder? Contrary to common myths, Bipolar Disorder isn’t simply fluctuating between happiness and sadness. It’s a complex mental health condition that brings extreme mood episodes: manic highs and depressive lows, which can be disruptive and overwhelming.
Types of Bipolar Disorder:
- Bipolar I: Defined by manic episodes lasting at least 7 days or severe mania requiring hospital care. Depressive episodes also typically occur, lasting at least 2 weeks.
- Bipolar II: A pattern of depressive episodes and hypomanic episodes, but not the full-blown manic episodes noted in Bipolar I.
- Cyclothymic Disorder: Periods of hypomanic symptoms and periods of depressive symptoms lasting for at least 2 years, but not meeting the diagnostic requirements for hypomanic and depressive episodes.
Triggers and Causes: While the precise cause isn’t known, it’s believed that genetics, brain structure, and chemistry, as well as environmental factors, play roles in developing Bipolar Disorder.
Recognising the Symptoms:
- Manic/Hypomanic Episodes: Feelings of euphoria, increased energy, decreased need for sleep, racing thoughts, risk-taking behaviours.
- Depressive Episodes: Feelings of sadness, hopelessness, lack of energy, fatigue, trouble concentrating, changes in sleep and appetite.
Seeking Balance: Though Bipolar Disorder can be daunting, with proper treatment – including medications, counselling, and lifestyle adjustments – individuals can lead fulfilling, productive lives. Early detection and support can make all the difference.
It's vital for all of us to foster an environment where misconceptions can be dismantled and genuine understanding can flourish. As we count down to World Mental Health Day, let's remind ourselves that every individual's experience is valid, and it's through shared understanding and empathy that healing spaces are created.
Until tomorrow, when we dive into another layer of the mental health,
Warm regards,
Dekunle
